FIRST OF ALL YOU MUST HAVE THE FOLLOWING:
A GPK file. This is the Coordinate Geometry database that contains many things........ but most importantly for this tool....it contains stored parcels and chains.
The "Legal Description Library" file. You can find these files under F:\Resource\GEOPAK\DDBS\.Two versions are available:
- Western_Metric.ldb (for Metric projects)
- Western_US_Customary.ldb (for English or US Customary projects)
- Open any MicroStation file.
- Invoke the Legal Description Editor (as shown below):
Applications > Geopak Road > Geometry > Legal Description
Or... use the icon (as shown below):
![]()
Set the desired Legal Description Library using the pulldowns, Library > Set Current Library/Style (as shown below):
This brings up the Set Current Library dialog (as shown below) and will most likely be set for the default library that comes with Geopak 2001. Click on the Set Current Library File button to browse to a different location:
Browse to the location of WFL's Legal Description Library file, (as shown below) and press OK:
The Set Current Library dialog should now appear (as shown below). Select METRIC as the Current Style and press OK. The ENGLISH style is still being created.
Using the pulldowns from the Legal Description Editor, select Insert > Line/Curve/Spiral Phrase, (as shown below):
This brings up the Insert Lines/Curves/Spiral dialog.
NOTE: If your chain HAS spirals and SCS curves and also have the Legal Description "patch" loaded, (MR2001_01_21) then simply highlight all the elements that make up your chain and press Insert, (as shown below):
To see if you have the patch loaded, click on Applications > Geopak Road > About Geopak.
This brings up the Version Control Information. Click on Version Control Information button, then MRs (as shown below): If you see "mr2001_01_21.txt", then you have the patch loaded.
NOTE: If you do not have the patch loaded, please contact me.
If your chain HAS spirals and SCS curves...and you do NOT have the Legal Description "patch" loaded, (MR2001_01_21), it's a little more time consuming to build the description. This is due to how Geopak stores SCS curves into COGO. When the curve of the SCS is named (for example) C2, the spirals adopt the name of the curve and are each appended with an A and a B. The entry spiral (in this case) would be name C2B and the exit spiral would be named C2A. The B stands for "back" and the A stands for "ahead'. When the Legal Description Editor displays all the elements that make up the chain.... and it comes to an SCS curve... the elements are displayed in alphabetical order. Thus.... in the case previously mentioned, the SCS would display in this order, C2A, C2, C2B. If all elements were simply selected together as is the case when there are no spirals in the chain.... the description is jumbled and is obviously in error.
So... when you have spirals and SCS curves, you must select the displayed elements one at a time and insert them separately. See the example below:
Select all elements up to the SCS, and press Insert:
Select the entry spiral, and press Insert:
Select the curve, and press Insert:
Select the exit spiral, and press Insert:
And so on.......... until all the elements of the chain are inserted in the correct order.
NOTE: The Legal Description "patch" , (MR2001_01_21) fixes this problem. If you do not have the patch loaded, please contact me.
An example of the output is shown below. You may save this ASCII file by clicking on File > Save As and then open it with WORD to make any enhancements to the text.
