DRAW ANCILLARY DATA ON CROSS SECTIONS

V8 Method

The traditional WFL method for drawing ancillary data on the cross sections has been replaced with the Typical Sections "Existing Features" and "Right-of-way".

Bentley Civil has created a very powerful tool that takes drawing Ancillary Data on Cross Sections and Profiles to a new level. This tool is packed with so many features that at the moment, I can't see how it could be improved. The Help files for this tool are well written, so no attempt will be made here to rewrite the instructions. I'll simply illustrate a few examples on how this tool can be used.

Example 1... (Plot the location of a water line on the cross sections and/or profile):

Given: A water line has been located and the designer has been provided with an ASCII file containing the data.

Required: Draw the water line location on each cross section and on the profile.

Let's use the following example for the ASCII file containing the water line location. Please note that the exact format of the ASCII file isn't really important. The columns of data can be arranged in any order. COGO allows the flexibility to import an ASCII file in basically any combinations of columns... this will be discussed later.

A fragment of the ASCII file is shown below:

Invoke the COGO dialog using the icon shown below or by accessing the MicroStation pulldowns Applications > Geopak Road > Geometry > Coordinate Geometry:

The COGO dialog is depicted below:

Invoke the Import ASCII file to COGO tool using the COGO pulldowns, File > Import > ASCII points as shown below:

The Import ASCII file to COGO dialog is depicted below. Notice the left side of the dialog and Field Order area. The buttons below Field Order can be arranged to match the column contents of your ASCII file. Simply click on one of the combo buttons and select the type that corresponds to your ASCII file. Browse to the ASCII file to import, adjust the Delimiter fields, (in this case, I'm using spaces rather than commas or something else.)

Press Apply.

The points from the ASCII file will now be stored into COGO. In this case 345 points were stored as shown below, Press OK:

The next step is to create a chain consisting of these stored points. From the COGO dialog, select Element > Chain > Store > From Elements as shown below:

The Store Chain From Elements dialog is depicted below. Type in the desired Chain Name and adjust the Station combo button, (shown here using Begin Station).

Adjust the Element Type, (shown here as Point) and type in your point range using a hyphen. Individual points may be typed in and separated with commas if out of order.

Press the <Add and press Store Chain.

The results are shown below where chain WATER was successfully stored into COGO:

The next step is to store the profile of the water line. Remember, these points also had elevations associated with them. We're going to use the same stored points to store the profile.

From the previous step, the results of the COGO pulldown commands remain in the COGO Key-in field, "Store Chain water 500-844 Station 2+719.24". Place your cursor in the COGO Key-in field, double click on Chain and type in PRO or Profile. Remove all characters past the last point as shown below and press Enter on the keyboard:

Invoke the Draw Ancillary Features tool using the icon shown below or by accessing the MicroStation pulldowns, Applications > Geopak Road > Cross Sections > Draw Ancillary Features:

The Draw Ancillary Features dialog is depicted below:

Adjust the fields for Job number, Chain and Station Range. Set the View to Cross Section. For this exercise Label Scale isn't used. For more information on Label Scale, see the Geopak Help files.

Adjust the Intersecting Elements combo button to Chain and select the Chain and Profile using the "down arrow" buttons. The chain can also be selected using the Identify Chain selection button and clicking on the cross section cell. All other fields and toggles within the Intersecting Elements section can be ignored.

Adjust the Display Settings as desired. There are many options within this area of the dialog. In the example shown above, a Symbol will be placed on each cross section at the exact elevation and horizontal offset from centerline. The symbology of the symbol can be adjusted by double clicking in the symbology adjustment area, (below Display Settings). There are a variety of symbols to pick from. The Justification can be adjusted as well as the Width and Height of the Symbol.

NOTE: A cell can also be configured and placed, rather than a symbol. Set the combo button to Cell and type in the cell name. Currently the "Browse icon" used for browsing to the location of a cell library is disabled:

Text can also be placed. Set the combo button to Text and adjust the settings for text font, text size, rotation, justification, etc......This option allows the user to look in one design file for an element and draw text in cross sections or along a profile.

Once the dialog is completed, press Add Element Set as shown below:

Once Add Element Set is pressed, the collection widow reflects the dialog settings. Press Draw as shown below to draw the symbol on each cross section within the station range of the dialog.

The result (illustrated in cross section view) is shown below:

An example (illustrating the chain drawn in plan view) is shown below:

To draw the location of the water line in a profile view, (specifically to draw this profile on the same profile cell as your mainline profile) is a little trickier....... that procedure is illustrated below:

Since the horizontal position of the water line (chain) is not the same as the centerline of the proposed design, the profile of the water line must be "projected" on the mainline profile cell. This is easily done using the Draw Profiles tool, (New Method).

Open the MicroStation file that contains the profile cell for your mainline profile.

Invoke the Draw Profiles tool using the icons below or the MicroStation pulldowns Applications > Geopak Road > Plans Preparation > Draw Profiles:

The Draw Profiles dialog (Projection Tab) is depicted below, positioned next to the profile cell for the mainline chain, (Main1):

Invoke the Profile Cell Control dialog and assure that this profile cell is the active cell, as shown below:

Adjust the Details area of the Draw Profiles Projection tab by selecting the Type as COGO Chain, select the water line chain and profile, and the Begin and End station range, as shown below:

Adjust the Display Settings area of the Draw Profiles Projection tab by selecting either By Level Symbology or By Feature, similar to other Geopak dialogs.

Click on Add Line as shown below:

The dialog below illustrates the resulting collection window containing the adjusted settings:

An example (illustrating the "Projected" profile drawn in plan view) is shown below:
