South Century Drive Project

The Western Federal Lands Highway Division of the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA), in partnership with the US Department of Agriculture Forest Service (FS), and Deschutes County Road Department plans to improve a section of South Century Drive (Deschutes County Road 42) near Sunriver, Oregon. It is owned and maintained by Deschutes County.

South Century Drive begins at US Highway 97 and ends at the intersection with Cascade Lakes Highway. Road 42 is classified as an arterial road and connects to National Forest System Roads. The project comprises 10.54 miles of South Century Drive. As shown on the attached map, the project begins at Burgess Road (MP 18.88) and ends west of the Robert D. Maxwell Veterans Memorial Bridge at MP 8.34.

The existing road surface is deteriorated, exhibiting signs of cracking, edge break-up and rutting. The horizontal and vertical alignments are substandard for the first 6.3 miles east of Burgess Road. The existing road width varies between 24 and 26 feet, which is substandard for this classification of road. There is inadequate sight distance and clear zones through much of the project. South Century Drive is a popular bike route and is listed on the County Bike Map as part of Bike Route 21.

The Primary purpose of the project is to reconstruct the pavement surface, realign both horizontal and vertical alignments to meet a 55 mph design speed, and widen the roadway section to provide 11- foot travel lanes and 5 –foot paved shoulders. The proposed work includes replacing existing culverts, construction of a rockery wall at Indian Creek pond, paving and enhancing three existing parking areas, and upgrading safety features such as guardrail, signing, striping, and grading work to realign horizontal and vertical curves.
